Matthew was brought in to start each day, during a 2 day executive master class in digital brand building in New York.
Matthew engages audiences big and small with warmth and authenticity as he shares his own story and helps the room ground in a bit of peace and mindfulness. His illustrations are simple and powerful and add visual stimulation.
If brought on for a lengthy session on ‘centering’ or a talk on the journey of career/life, Matthew has much to share.

Matthew Johnstone was a highlight when he presented at The Gawler Foundation’s annual Profound Healing – Sustainable Wellbeing Conference in Melbourne, 2012. He captivated an audience of over 300 people with his warmth, creativity and wit. Matthew skilfully shed light on the topic of mental health in a way that was accessible and engaging to such a diverse audience of health professionals, carers, people living with chronic illness and the general public interested in health. As the conference organiser, it was such a pleasure to work with Matthew. I found him to be an impressive speaker, both easy-going and reliable.

Geelong Grammar School was fortunate to have Matthew Johnstone come and spend two days with us in August. Through his inspiring presentations and his informal conversations he was able to personally connect with many students, staff and parents within our community. Matthew emphasised the importance of building resilience and his message reinforced many of the concepts covered within the students’ Positive Education curriculum. Everyone can, and did, connect with Matthew’s illustrations. His images, coupled with his carefully crafted words, allowed the audience to gain a deeper understanding into their own patterns of behaviour. Matthew’s early morning presentation – An illustrated guide to meditation, left the audience with a richer understanding of not only the benefits of mindful meditation but also a range of practical tips on how to practise meditation in a safe and comfortable environment. The fact that so many students placed orders to purchase Matthew’s books and that so many students went to the extra effort of sending a personal email of thanks to me explaining what they got out of Matthew’s presentations is a clear indication of the impact he had on our student body. I am grateful that someone of Matthew’s creative advertising and marketing talents has turned his focus to spreading powerful messages of wellbeing and balanced living throughout our world. Thank you Matthew!

On behalf of the NRL Welfare and Education team, I would like to thank you for your time in presenting part of the 2 day Mental Health First Aid course to over 50
The professional manner in the way you delivered the content and structure of the program was excellent and your ability to engage other experts in their field made the program very relevant to our industry.
The feedback we have received from all who attended has been overwhelming and I think it is fair to say that the course definitely opened everyone’s eyes and has encouraged them to broaden the understanding of Mental Health and Well Being issues at their own clubs and organisations.
I am happy to be a referee for any prospective organisation wanting to engage Matthew as a speaker.

With the increasing community awareness around mental health issues AGL looks forward to an ongoing and productive working relationship with Matthew as we expand our wellbeing program and I would highly recommend his presentation to any organisation.

Matthew is one of those rare individuals with an ability to capture and enthral an audience with what at first sight might appear challenging topics. Using creative visual narratives , often with humour, to convey storylines and messages which both disarm, entertain and inform the listener. His gift goes further in engaging his audiences on a very individual level, broadening out his message into fundamental areas of wellbeing that are relevant to and every one of us in our day to day lives. There is more wisdom and insight into the human condition by spending 45 minutes with Matthew than a lifetime of browsing self help books and dabbling with expensive therapy sessions. Matthew vibrant personality and ability to draw on a wealth of anecdotes ensures his audience feel he understands and speaks to them. Matthew engages his audience on multiple levels, challenging their perspective on certain issues such as mental health issues, risk taking behaviour, addiction and self esteem and offering personal insight to the cycle of our own lives, our aspirations and our moments of doubts and fears. Each member of the audience at UNICEF came away uplifted as much in ourselves as in to how powerful these messages are to those who are most vulnerable and misunderstood in our society. If your organisation wants to reframe an issue, change entrenched perceptions, or to inspire new thinking, I recommend you engage Matthew Johnstone as a key speaker at your next team meeting. Having discovered I had a Black Dog I sought out Matthew to be our keynote speaker for a series of Eight Seminars on Mental Wellbeing for Community Health and Mental Health professional staff in Blacktown, western Sydney. Matthew was a hit. People listen to survivors. But Matthew’s presentation was more than a single survivor’s story – it was a guy’s story that had universality, told with humour and illustrated with fantastic graphics.Matthew’s presentation at our Seminar Series was the highlight of the programme, very well-rated on the evaluations and summed up with this comment: Matthew’s talk was simple but very practical.
Easy to listen to & very helpful. Could you please pass on to him how helpful and clear his talk was.
None of the written comments noted how funny his presentation was but that was what made it easy to listen to. The audience was often in whoops of laughter.I think Matthew is making a wonderful and very original contribution to the community with publicly sharing his story, with his books and with his formal speaking engagements.
To put so much of yourself into this work with dignity and humour is a great gift. Valerie Atkinson

Eighty of our people, including board members and senior management, attended a ‘Lunch and Learn’ session where Matthew spoke about his journey and shared his personal story. Every person was engaged and deeply touched and affirmed by all or parts of each slide and elaboration thereof. As a result new levels of openess emerged around the floor immediately thereafter, as each person took on the language and acceptance of the normality of “owning a black dog” – either with in him/herself or loved ones, or colleagues. Sharing “hidden dogs” has become easier as a result.I fully encourage presentations like the one Matthew shared with us for any audience as a means to normalise, and assist uncover the grey, black, hidden, overt or other dogs and thereby save sanity and lives.Rolene Fain

We had 132 MHFA instructors from very state and territory in Australia attend the conference this year. We have received many emails from the conference participants about how much they enjoyed and learnt from your talk and wonderful artwork used in your presentation.Your talk at the conference certainly helped to enthuse the MHFA instructors.
Your humour and authenticity kept the audience continually engaged and interested. I would not hesitate to recommend your presentation to any audience. I would love to know that our policy makers, educators and law enforcement officers have been able to hear you talk. My best wishes to you for the wonderful work you are doing.

I personally found your presentation informative and inspiring, but light – which I think is very important considering some of the subjects discussed.
I think that the topics you spoke about are relevant to all of us in our everyday lives.
I have received some very positive feedback from the audience, including: “I thought it was one of the best presentations we have been given so far.
Matthew’s style was relaxed and easy to listen to, his presentation was wonderful with the pictures and artwork, as well as excerpts from his book, showing wonderful creativity.
The fact there were no actual words on the slides was a good thing to take in rather than our normal presentations. Please pass on my thanks and my enjoyment of his work.” “It was the one of the most interesting and enlightening talks I have heard, from other comments I heard since the talk it was definitely very worthwhile” “Worth every second…some uncomfortable truths but they helped me a lot.” “I thought Matt’s presentation was excellent. It was relevant, informative & interesting. I can see value in getting Matt to give similar presentations to all PWCS employees.” “Inspiring and highly motivational”

The Counselling Team invited Matthew to present some his work to our students and parents during the APS National Psychology Week last year. Matthew’s presentation was very well received and it generated much interest within the College community.Earlier this year Matthew was invited back to present his work to the full staff of the College during our staff development day. Having attended many staff development presentations over the last 15 years I would rate Matthew’s presentation as one of the most engaging and relevant presentations. The litmus test of any presentation is not only how well a presentation is received and the quality of the questions asked during or at the end of the presentation but also how relevant and realistic is the presentation to the audience. I am satisfied that all of these criteria were met at the highest level by Matthew.Matthew is an engaging and charismatic presenter – deriving not only from his personality and
experience in presenting but also from an evident passion to educate people on the topic mental illness and importantly to seek out early intervention. Tom Cerni,

On the 29th of April 2011, Matthew Johnstone presented his Headstrong Presentation to the Alumni of the UNSW an audience of just under 500.
Matthew was part of a panel, which included Professor Gordon Parker from the Black Dog Institute and Professor Ian Hickie from the Brain and Mind Institute.
Matthew spoke of what it is to be a teenager, recognizing symptoms of mood disorders,
common coping strategies, the fears of seeking help and how to access the proper help.
After a panel discussion with the audience he wrapped the night with a 10-minute talk on
understanding resilience. What is unique and stand out about the way Matthew presents is that the entire presentation is illustrated; the images are poignant, often funny but get to the core of what is being discussed. He enlightens and informs with creative visuals and inspiring metaphors.
This is the 2nd time Alumni have had Matthew speak; he comes with our

I rate Matthew extremely highly as an illustrator and as a speaker. I have heard many people present over the years and I put Matthew in the highest echelon for a number of reasons.
Firstly, he is a superb communicator – both in ‘connecting’ with the audience and in delivering a focussed ‘message’. Secondly, as a speaker and as an illustrator, he has a unique capacity to communicate a positive and empathic message to the complex topics that he addresses.I have now observed Matthew in approximately twenty presentations and remain of the view that he is one of the best presenters that I have heard over time. Further, his four books that I have read have been distinguished by having a seemingly universal ‘impact’ on the readers – again attesting to his consummate capacity to ‘communicate’

I would highly recommend Matthew Johnstone as an engaging and inspiring speaker. His professional presentation style together with amazing graphics contribute to an unforgettable and motivating presentation. We were delighted to have Matthew speaking on mental wellbeing, resilience and mindfulness at two of our events Mind & Its Potential 2011 with 1,000+ delegates and Young Minds 2012 with 600+ delegates. Matthew’s presentations are a breath of fresh air and provide a novel and memorable way of communicating important information. Beth Phelan
Matthew provided a highly personal and moving presentation to the Association of Advisers’ National Conference of over 800 people. The imagery captured the audience’s attention, and his calm, reassuring voice conveyed priceless messages around well-being and resilience. Many financial advisers face the mental burden of managing money and risks for their clients – they represent a high-risk group in relation to mental health issues – and this session has provided practical, uplifting messages to help them face into these challenges. I highly recommend Matthew. Brad Fox
