The Alphabet of Love by Matthew Johnstone and James Kerr

By 6 February 2012No Comments

This is our 1st cab off the rank for our weekly column in the Daily Mail UK. 1 down 25 to go. H is for Hope you like it.

A is for Attraction

For some, it is a bolt of lightning. For others, an irresistible animal magnetism. Poets celebrate it in verse, divorce lawyers retire from the proceeds.

And every minute of every day, in every maternity ward on every continent, life is created from it.

Attraction – that mysterious, magical moment when eyes meet and souls collide – can move mountains and change lives.

But what is it, and how do we make it happen for us?

For scientists, it comes down to chemicals. Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin and Adrenalin, all engaged in a genetic struggle for survival.  For Wordsworth it was being ‘Surprised by Joy”.  For the Rolling Stones it is more ‘Lets spend the Night Together.’

As for the rest of us, we might not know what causes it, but we sure know how it feels: butterflies doing backflips in our belly, dilated pupils, elated emotions, an inexplicable urge to shout to the heavens.

So, to find love, begin at the beginning – with an A for Attraction: a coy smile, a lingering eye, a flirtatious touch … As writer Charles Haanel says, “To acquire love, fill yourself up with it until you become a magnet.”

After all, we attract love in much the same way as we attract luck, money and parking tickets – by the way we are.  So, your homework for this week is to ask yourself, “Who will I be today? And who will I attract?”

Attracting love:

Smile

It sounds obvious, but sometimes the answer is sitting right under our noses, literally. To have people like you, show them you like them.  As little orphan Annie says: “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.”

Dress for success

According to experts at the Pantone Colour Institute, women like men in blue. It signifies strength, seriousness and dependability. Men meanwhile prefer a woman in pink, or peach, as it makes them more approachable.

Be positive

Both men and women are attracted to confident, generous, positive and, yes, nice people. So be your lovely self and see what happens. Then you’ll attract someone for all the right reasons – yours.
